Watching other people "do it for the gram" is kinda interesting 🤔 😁
A different view of Yosemite Falls than what you usually see...
Throwback to that amazing sunset when I stayed at the house instead of going to the beach because it didn't look like it would burn 🙄 At least I went outside and got to see it along with the cool orange rainbow.
It's #milkywaymonday so here's the galactic core tracked and stacked. I'm not sure how much benefit is gained from stacking in this case where I was able to track using a relatively low iso in cold temps where thermal noise isn't a problem. Tracking and stacking the Milky Way with a foreground adds a whole set of problems for blending in an untracked foreground so it's not something you'll see me do very often - if ever. But it's a cool example of what's possible. I'd like to shoot a tracked and stacked high resolution pano of the core maybe with a really sharp 85mm lens. That should make an incredible print! I recently decided to start selling prints. I want them to be extremely high quality so I've been going back and shooting locations that I've shot before but this time I'm focusing on getting a clean foreground by taking multiple shots that I stack for noise reduction. That's not really necessary for shots that will only be posted here on IG but for prints the extra time and effort is easily noticed. This location, Lake George in Mammoth, is a perfect example. I've shot it many times and I've gotten beautiful Milky Way shots here but this is by far the cleanest foreground I've captured. So Thank You to everyone that has inquired about buying prints because you've inspired me to step up the quality of my images. Hopefully I'll be ready to start selling prints next month! #mammoth #nightscaper #milkyway #longexposure #mountains #easternsierra #night #astrophotography
My brief trip to Yosemite last week started with catching the sunrise from Tunnel View and ended with watching the sunset from Taft Point. Perfect bookends to a great trip. Taft Point is an easy hike with stunning views of Yosemite Valley and El Capitan. Definitely one of my favorite hikes. #share_the_experience #yosemite #yosemite_national_park #taftpoint #sunset
Well I missed #milkywaymonday but here's another shot of the Milky Way over Mammoth Mountain. I went back to reshoot this because I found a better composition as I was leaving after the first night I shooting in this location. I also wanted to shoot a nice landscape shot with a tighter view of the Milky Way. Foreground is stacked and the Milky Way is a single tracked exposure. #nightscaper #milkyway #longexposure #mountains #easternsierra #mammoth @mammothmountain @visitmammoth
@codymayer22 and I headed up to Bald Mtn in the eastern Sierra yesterday hoping to catch a good sunset. We weren't disappointed! The peak offers an amazing 360° view which was perfect for this sunset because it was lit all around us. Finding this old cabin lit up was just a bonus. Definitely a memorable evening. This is a cell phone shot and Snapseed edit. #sky_marvels #sky_sultans #mammoth #easternsierra
Yosemite just looks better in black and white. Or maybe that's just because I originally shot it with black and white film back in the day. There's nothing quite like a good black and white print! For this shot I tried to recreate the look of Kodak's Pan-X film using the Nik Silver Efex Pro 2 plug-in for Photoshop. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the look of it and how it compares to film. Shot with a Canon 6D and Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens. #yosemite #share_the_experience #canon #canonfanphoto #canon6D #canonbringit #visitcalifornia #bw #monochrome #yosemite_national_park #promasterphoto #blackandwhite
My first trip to Yosemite was 45 years ago and I've been in love with it ever since. Of all the thousands of pictures I've taken there this is my favorite. I knew what I wanted to capture and I was able to do it. After driving all night to be there for sunrise - and Google telling me that I was going to be late - it was incredibly satisfying. Certainly made the journey all that much better. I was fortunate to spend two days there with absolutely gorgeous weather. One of those times when everything comes together to create a truly unforgettable trip. Shot with a Canon 6D and Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens stopped down to create the beautiful sunstar effect. #yosemite #share_the_experience #yosemite_national_park #promasterphoto #canon #canonfanphoto #canon6D #canonbringit #theonlycalifornia #conquer_ca #visitcalifornia
Happy 4th of July! I enjoyed some celestial fireworks last night as I shot the Milky Way over Mammoth Mountain. Conditions were absolutely perfect, probably the best I've had all year. Since I was shooting towards the ski resort and the town I did have some yellow light pollution which I reduced using the yellow HSL sliders in Lightroom. I stacked 12 one-minute exposures for the foreground and blended in a 4 minute tracked Milky Way shot. All images shot at 35mm using a Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II lens on a Canon 6D. Tracked with an iOptron Skytracker Pro tracker mounted on a ProMaster SP528C Specialist series carbon fiber tripod. It's pretty tough to come up with new and unique comps in the eastern Sierra so I'm pretty stoked on this one. Have a happy and safe holiday. #nightscaper #canon #canonfanphoto #canon6D #canonbringit #visitcalifornia #ioptron #milkyway #thegreatmilkywaychase #theonlycalifornia
Another shot from Mobius Arch in the Alabama Hills last week. I stacked the foreground images so I could brighten the rocks just a little instead of light painting. I wanted a silhouette but didn't want to lose all the detail in the rock. The sky is a two minute exposure at f4 ISO 1600. With the warmer temperatures I avoid shooting much longer than two minutes to avoid thermal noise. Up in the Sierra when temps are in the 30s or 40s I can easily shoot five minutes or more without worrying about introducing thermal noise but when temps are 70°+ it's a real issue. #nightscaper #longexposure #milkyway #mobiusarch #alabamahills
It's #milkywaymonday and we're in the prime Milky Way season! Here's a shot from my epic all night hike in the snow a couple of weeks back. I have a backlog of shots to process but I suppose there's no real hurry to get them posted. With this shot I wasn't happy with the colors so I adjusted it in Snapseed to remove the green tones and make it more blue overall. #nightscaper #amazing_longexpo #nightimages #milkyway #stars #night#nightphotography #night #astrophotography
I'm excited to stop in Yosemite on the way back up to Mammoth since Tioga Pass finally opens tomorrow!
Made a quick trip out to Eagle Rock to shoot with @cartermurphyphoto and @jareddweintraub We had surprisingly good conditions. At this spot the light pollution from San Diego can really be a problem except when there's a heavy marine layer. You can still see the light pollution in this shot but it wasn't too bad and definitely didn't impact our view of the stars. I stacked a dozen shots of the foreground which I lit using my headlamp and blended that stack with a single tracked exposure of the sky. I ended up shooting 7 of the first 8 nights of this Milky Way window. Pretty exhausting! #milkyway #thegreatmilkywaychase #night #eaglerock #promasterphoto #astrophotography
As we drove up to Tioga Lake we saw the clouds were creating this beautiful light on the mountains. The five of us jumped out of the cars and ran to the lake and started shooting. It probably would have looked really funny to any non-photograpers. We were there to shoot the Milky Way (of course!) and we were concerned about the clouds but in a couple of hours they had completely dissipated and we had another night of incredible conditions. Getting a beautiful sunset and clear skies? It doesn't get much better. #yosemite #easternsierra #sky_marvels #tioga
