June 4th marked our late founder Dame Daphne’s birthday — and so it felt like a very fitting day for orphans Emoli, Sagala, and Tagwa to graduate to our Voi Reintegration Unit. This is, after all, our original Unit (the first stockades were built besides Daphne and David Sheldrick’s former home in Tsavo) and where our journey with elephants began.
The move marked a homecoming of sorts for Emoli and Sagala, both of whom were rescued from Tsavo during the drought. It was an equally momentous occasion for Tagwa, the Nursery’s mini matriarch, as she handed over her matriarchal duties to the next generation. All three babies took the move in stride, embarking on Tsavo life fresh-faced and alert, lapping up the love bestowed on them by the rest of the Voi herd and seeming very comfortable in their new home. A full account of the move, with lots more photos and video, can be found on our website in the “News” section — link in stories! #SWTgraduations
