#tbt to October 30, 1998, Ama Dablam. 1) on the summit, L->R Ted Handwerk, John Culberson, me, and Bob Meyer (behind the lens) after most of two days on the move, 2) Ama from basecamp. Our route, the SW Ridge basically follows the right skyline and then skirts the hanging glacier of the Dablam on climber’s right. 3) waving for the camera, Bob is past the Yellow Tower and beginning the Mushroom Ridge. 4) Nervous about how committed we are on summit day. We went light, which at the time meant no helmets, ropes, protection. We were free soloing essentially and at the cruxes and other sketchy bits, we’d clip a jumar into a rockfall tattered, sunbaked fixed rope as a “self-belay.” The climbing was gorgeous and since we were climbing at the tail end of the season the mountain was empty save for us. The dance with risk and consequence with other fine humans - wouldn’t trade those necky days in rare air for anything. .
